Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong

Introduction

The Korean Consulate in Hong Kong was established in 1949. Since that time, it has worked steadfastly to nurture the close ties between Korea and Hong Kong, to promote trade and economic cooperation between Korea and Hong Kong, and to serve the interests of the Korean community in Hong Kong.

Korea and Hong Kong share a great deal in terms of history and culture. Both peoples are known for their strong work ethic. Building on these commonalities, Korea and Hong Kong have become key partners for growth and co-prosperity through vibrant economic, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges.

As of 2018, Hong Kong was Korea’s fourth largest export market and its third most important overseas investment destination. Korea, for its part, was Hong Kong’s sixth most active trading partner. About 1,500 Korean companies are operating in Hong Kong, seeking to reinforce bilateral economic cooperation. More than 2.1 million people travel between Korea and Hong Kong every year, and that number continues to grow. Nowadays, Korean pop music and Korean dramas are becoming very popular in Hong Kong. This “Korean wave” is generating immense interest among the people of Hong Kong, and as a result the two peoples are becoming closer friends.

As a major trading and finance centre for the Asia-Pacific region, with an excellent service-based economy and top-notch harbour and airport facilities, Hong Kong is one of the most important strategic locations for the global economy.

Furthermore, Macau is developing a unique culture and tourism industry, based on its rich history and traditions.

The Consulate will do best to serve two economies and the Korean community in Hong Kong. Also, the Consulate will continue to communicate with and promote the rights and interests of Koreans in Hong Kong and will step up its efforts to address their concerns.
