Zhao Shizhen, suspicious and jealous, marries Lin Ruxiang from a bordello. Because their son Xilang has dropped a sash of Ruxiang’s underclothes at this tutor Lu Shike’s room, Shizhen misunderstands that Ruxiang and Shike have an affair. He realizes his mistakes only after Shike leaves with a letter. At a scam-inn, Shizhen Kills a robber, cuts his head off and covers the body with his clothes. Everybody thinks that Shizhen is killed.
The Huaiyang county magistrate accuses Ruxiang and Zhao Qin of adultery and murder because Qin is holding Ruxiang who tries to hang herself when the police arrive. Sanniang, foster mother of Ruxiang, takes Xilang to the court to tell their grievances. Unexpectedly, the judge turns out to be Shike who believes Ruxiang is lascivious and sentences her to death. But, out of gratitude, he sets off for his new post with Xilang and has his newly-wed wife Limei take care of him.
Later, Shizhen returns in honour and reunites with Xilang. Shocked at the death of Ruxiang, he decides to go home to mourn at her tomb. In disguise of a ghost, Ruxiang reprimands him and then tells how she escapes in disguise of a deceased prisoner with the help of jailor Chai Quan. Finally, Shizhen and Ruxiang are reconciled and reunite with Xilang.
