Incomparable music, matchless voices
As a spectacular finale to the Festival, the Savonlinna Opera Festival Choir makes its Hong Kong concert debut with a gala of great opera music. Finland is famed for its lakes and choirs, and these Nordic voices are among the country’s very best. Their programme embraces the Wagner-Verdi bicentennial celebrations, and also the HKAF’s underlying theme of the ‘Hero’. Excerpts from Tristan und Isolde, Rienzi and Tannhäuser all typify Wagner’s epic style, whilst German fondness for the heroic and spectacular finds its Italian equivalent in Verdi’s Aida.
The concert also showcases timeless favourites and rare gems of the Italian repertoire, including ‘Vesti la giubba’ from Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, and ‘La mamma morta’ from Giordano’s Andrea Chénier. With its Faustian theme, Mefistofele is the only complete opera by Arrigo Boito. To be heard for the first time in Hong Kong, its grand Epilogue pays homage to the mysticism of Wagner and the Italian lyric tradition. Incomparable music, matchless voices – Savonlinna’s singers close this year’s Festival in grand and unforgettable style.
