“Princess Chang Ping” – Cantonese Opera Extravaganza for Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of HKSAR

Description

Description

Zhou Shi-xian chances upon Ming Dynasty’s Princess Chang-ping, hitherto thought to have died, in the guise of a nun. After much persistence, he manages to persuade the Princess to reveal her real identity and acknowledge him as her betrothed. He strategies for her return to the imperial court to petition the Qing Emperor for the release of the crown prince (her younger brother), and a royal burial for the Ming emperor (her father) as conditions for her “surrender”. To appease Ming Dynasty loyalists, the Qing accedes to her requests and thereafter arranges for the couple’s matrimony. Having achieved their objectives, the Princess and Zhou commit suicide on their wedding day as pre-arranged, choosing death over living under the Qing rule.
