Dances Inspired by Classical Dance, Music, and Poetry

Four Dances that come from traditional forms and techniques – and then transcend those forms to become universally accessible and understood:

Stella Lau, Ou Lu, and Zhao Minhua’s neo-classical ballet to Etudes by Carl Czerny and Knudåge Riisager. This dynamic piece infuses creative input from the students into the classical world of ballet, fusing classical technique with fresh and beautiful staging that honor and enhance the traditions from which it comes.

Yan Xiaoqiang’s Autumn Thoughts. Out of the Chinese Dance tradition, this beautiful piece is inspired by Ma Zhiyuan’s poem of the same title, from the Yuan period. It is an exploration of the feelings of autumn in different places, and considers how one may have a sense of isolation, even when there are many people around.

Jaime Redfern’s Contemporary Whispering Scream explores the rapid flow of information in today’s world, and the notion of time running out. While originally inspired and developed with classical music, the dance as performed explores wild and innovative sound environments.

Visiting guest artist Christine Gouzelis’s Savage Symphony is inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, but take it in another direction entirely, giving a whole new interpretation to this music.
