Art Course (3-Year) Annual Showcase: Part II

Description

Description

Everybody has the inborn right to appreciate and create art. The focus should be on the power of the artworks and not on the intelligence or the physical abilities of the creators.

idArt, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals believes that art allows each person to develop and exhibit one’s own “abilities”. Thus, a year ago, we decided to launch the first 3-year art course designated for people with mental or physical disabilities. The course outline is based on the tertiary curriculum where both practice and theory are included. Our aim is to allow our students having equal opportunity to learn art, to explore themselves and to enrich their lives through art. Even though it is an “impossible” dream, we strive to make it into being.

It is a bold attempt. Thank you for the participation of Department of Visual Studies, Lingnan University in our program. They have been advising on the design of the course outline. Their input let us have a more complete record for analyzing the effectiveness of the program. We are grateful to the instructors who dare to dream with us. Without any local precedent, they develop the course outline, the teaching mode and the materials all out of their own experience and belief. Each lesson is an experiment. Each feedback from the students is the essential ingredient for the next step.

Time has passed very fast when we are captivated by the surprises and happiness brought by art. The first school year is over. Our students have completed 270 class hours over 30 weeks, excluding the self-study class during the school year and the 10-week summer course. Their persistence, their passion and their potential all encourage us and excite us. Showing to us in this exhibition is not only the fruitful results of their learning, but also the conviction of this “impossible” dream of the instructors, the staff, the volunteers and the family members of our students.

Wishing this dream is shared and supported by you. And everybody has the opportunity to exhibit his or her abilities and enjoy the colors of life through art.
