The 21st edition of Sonic Anchor explores ways of “misusing” traditional musical instruments to creative ends, and presents the violin and percussions like you’ve never heard them before. Hong Kong native percussion-improviser Louis Siu is well-known for his non-conventional approach to “hitting things” – from outdoor improvisation with noise-making objects, to DIY “water gongs” – Siu strikes a perfect balance between auditory nuances and performative theatricality. Siu is paired up with Yan Yulong and Liu Xinyu from Beijing. Electric violinist Yan abuses his instrument with a myriad of delays, loops and pedals. Liu on the other hand is an expert at no-input mixer feedback. Together the duo creates lush drone-like textures that shimmer with poetic detail.
