A Month In The Country
Description
Description
Summer. A Russian country estate. Beliayev, a lively young man, arrives to be the new tutor of the family’s only son. His appearance soon unsettles all character’s relationships. Natalya is married to Islayev, a rich landowner, although she is emotionally more attached to Rakitin, her husband’s close friend. Natalya is instantly attracted by Beliayev and becomes jealous of Vera, her adopted daughter. She even considers marrying Vera to an old neighbour. A storm is gathering in the characters’ inner states, while it is fine summertime.
Ivan Turgenev wrote this play in 1849 before he earned his reputation as a highly accomplished novelist by such colossal works as Fathers and Sons and Virgin Soil. A Month in the Country is recognized as the forerunner of modern naturalistic theatre. Its influence is strongly felt in the masterpieces of Anton Chekhov. Turgenev remarked, “I don’t care how or where a woman sweats; I want to know how she thinks.” This play is a brilliant demonstration of Turgenev’s insight and skilful composition of his characters’ feelings and state of mind.
